This research initiative, led by the Digital Rights and Freedoms Regional Hub, examines the intersection where technology meets our fundamental digital rights, focusing on under-examined digital rights topics.
I provided the Greater Internet Freedom project at Internews with digital rights research, strategy, and advocacy consultancy services. I steered the GIF Consortium's preparation and publication of multi-regional research on biometrics and digital identity threats, usage, and impact in 27 countries. The focus regions included Africa, the Balkans, Central Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and South and Southeast Asia. I also supported the GIF and the Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Technology to produce and publish informational material on the most pertinent digital rights and internet freedom topics. This project was funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
I developed and co-led a $20, 000 COVID-19 surveillance and data protection consortium project in Kenya and Uganda. The project examined government and private actors’ surveillance practices during the COVID-19 pandemic in the two countries. The consortium documented 11 trends and challenges affecting the rights to privacy, data protection, freedom of expression, and access to information, and captured the stories of Kenyan and Uganda citizens who were subjected to contact-tracing initiatives. This project was funded by the Collaboration on International ICT Policy in East and Southern Africa (CIPESA).
I managed part of a $200, 000 digital rights research, advocacy and litigation project covering 6 Eastern African countries. These included Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and South Sudan. We won one strategic litigation petition resulting in the offence of publishing alarming information being declared unconstitutional in Kenya. This project was funded by the Ford Foundation.
I convened the Kenya national validation meeting for the African Declaration on Internet Rights and Principles Coalition (AfDec), securing input on its Data Protection Advocacy Toolkit. This project was funded by the AfDec.
I provided freedom of expression inputs to a global tech company addressing online attacks against women politicians and journalists.
